Backsteps

Backsteps for iPhone

Keep the way back.

Save photos and notes before changing a setup. When you need to put it back, follow your steps in reverse order.

Help with Backsteps

Record a project

Create a project, then add a step before each change. Take a photo, choose one from your library, or use a text-only step. Add a note about how to put it back and where you left the parts.

Follow your return guide

Open a project and tap “Put it back.” The last step you recorded appears first. Mark steps complete as you go. Your progress stays saved when you leave the app.

Make a backup

Use the project menu to export a Backsteps backup with its photos and notes. Keep a copy in Files or a destination you trust. From the library menu, import a backup to create a new, independent project.

Share a printable guide

Choose the PDF guide in the project menu, then save, print, or share it using the iPhone share sheet.

Camera access

Backsteps asks for camera access only when you tap Camera. If you previously declined, you can enable access in your iPhone Settings under Backsteps. You can always use selected photos or text-only steps.

Find an archived project

Use the library’s archive view to open past projects. Restore a project to return it to your active library.

Protect your projects

Export backups before deleting the app or replacing your phone. A PDF is a readable guide; a Backsteps backup is the file you can import back into the app. Copies you share or export must be deleted separately.

Privacy policy

Effective September 6, 2026

Backsteps keeps your projects, photos, notes, and completion progress locally on your device. The app does not send this content to the developer or operate a server that receives it.

Backsteps does not include advertising, analytics, tracking, account registration, or third-party software development kits.

Camera and photos

If you choose to take a photo, Backsteps requests permission to use the camera. Photos captured in the app are saved inside Backsteps and are not automatically added to your photo library.

If you choose an existing photo, Apple’s system photo picker provides the image you select. Backsteps does not request unrestricted access to your photo library. Images are resized and re-encoded for storage without copying the original location metadata.

Export and backup

You may export a PDF guide or a project backup, and choose where to save or share it. These exports contain the photos and notes you selected to include by creating the project. The app does not encrypt exported files with a separate password. A destination you choose, such as a cloud-storage provider or messaging service, handles the file according to its own practices.

Your device’s backup system may include Backsteps data according to your Apple account and device settings. Backsteps does not provide its own cloud synchronization service.

Deleting data

You can delete individual steps and projects inside Backsteps. Deleting the app removes its local data. Copies you previously exported, shared, or included in device backups must be managed separately.

Support correspondence

If you email support, Bobby Hancock receives the information you choose to send and uses it to respond to your request. Do not send private project content unless it is needed and you wish to share it. Email is handled by the email providers used by you and the publisher. This support website is hosted by OpenAI Sites and its infrastructure providers; ordinary web requests are subject to those providers’ practices. The Backsteps app does not contact this site in the background.

Changes

This policy may be updated if the app’s functionality changes. Review the effective date above for the current version.
